Khan is also the main vocalist of Rufus. Khan was born a Catholic. She attended the Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church elementary school. She credits her grandmother for introduction to jazz music when she was just a little girl. Khan was captivated by Blues and rhythm when she was a young teen. She started to sing in smaller groups across the Chicagoland area. The first group was Cash McCall's Lyfe group was comprised of Hassan Khan. Chaka and Hassan were married in the year 1970.
